We live, we produce ideas, we create, we die and our atoms break down and become something new. We serve as building blocks to the universe. The oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus that make up 99% of our mass become something new. It could be as simple as a flower, or as complex as a newborn star. This blog simply serves as a tribute to science. It may include anything from astronomy/astrophysics to geology to neuroscience to engineering and everything in between. This blog may also include the occasional personal post and rant on capitalism. (and Carl Sagan, can’t forget Carl Sagan)

I look up — many people feel small because they’re small and the Universe is big — but I feel big, because my atoms came from those stars. There’s a level of connectivity.

That’s really what you want in life, you want to feel connected, you want to feel relevant, you want to feel like a participant in the goings on of activities and events around you.

That’s precisely what we are, just by being alive…

- Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson [ x ]

New streetlamps could improve your view of the stars.

A new paper published in the journal Optics Express describes a system for focusing light from streetlamps directly on the area required, with almost no light leakage horizontally or vertically. Conventional street lamps scatter up to 20% of their energy away from where it is required, not only wasting power but also leading to light pollution which obscures your view of the night sky.

The proposed LED lamp uses a lens to limit where the light is projected, with a reflecting cavity to recyle light that would otherwise be wasted. The team thinks the system would use between 10 to 50% less power to illuminate a section of road than current LED streetlamps, which are already more efficient than regular lamps.

A prototype is being developed and is hoped to be completed this October.

Saving power and allowing us to view the stars? This is as perfect as it can get. Looking forward to this.

but don’t we want lights on the sidewalk because some people might not have cars and want to go out at night and still feel safe and can see the roads?

Something similar is already used in Hawaii! Well on one street as a control/test. In my engineering class, we split into teams and built an Underwater ROV (remotely operated vehicle) that could operate underwater to pick up trash and other objects. We worked on it for about two months: constructing the robot, wiring the control box, waterproofing all the connections, attaching a camera and engineering a device that could pick up garbage. Last week we tested out the robots at our local pier. Seeing our arm move underwater on the tv screen above land was one of the most accomplished feelings I’ve ever felt. I worked together with some of my greatest friends to build something that moves and actually works. It taught me that hard work pays off and even though something seems hard, as long as you don’t give up you can create wonderful things. Now off to college where I can apply these skills towards an engineering degree!

for-all-mankind:

A portion of the salt and pepper you see on an analog television actually comes from the radiation left over from the Big Bang. The radiation, known as the cosmic microwave background, permeates all of space and gives the universe an average temperature of 2.7 K (-455 degrees F), just slightly above absolute zero.

The first detection of the microwave background was made in 1964 at AT&T Bell labs where physicists initially thought that an accumulation of bird poop on their 20-foot antenna was the source of the unwanted noise signals. The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for the accidental discovery which supported the now prevailing Big Bang Theory.

It is the start of the year 2000, and something is wrong.

Husbands and wives wake up next to each other, scared. They don’t know who the person in the bed with them is. Who is this person? Why are they in my house? Is this my house? Is this their house?

They go out to investigate. A five-year-old child uses a Windows 98 computer in the living room. The child turns around, and asks, “Is it time for me to go to school, mommy?”

The world is in panic. The President of the United States, who awoke in the Oval Office with no knowledge of being elected, calls for a large-scale investigation.

After weeks of asking adults and children alike what is going on, and looking at the various public records, they realize that the children are not confused at all. The adults can only remember what last happened in 1989. However, the children that can speak say that they were born anywhere from 1991 to 1996. Public officials can only draw one conclusion.

To every adult, the 1990s never happened. The children, however, cannot have come from nowhere.

It doesn’t take long after this conclusion for them to realize that only 90s kids remember the 90s.

These are some of my favorite shots from our trip which was basically just one whole day to get around from our hotel in Kowloon to Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok and all the way back the hotel. It was a tiring day for my feet!
